GK-12 Lesson/Unit Plan

Lesson 1 Title: Polymer Ball Experiment

Submitted by:  Kristen Moffat and Carley Ross

Lesson 1
Short description:
This is an enrichment lesson.  We took class 706 to the undergraduate lab at Columbia University.  The lesson was introduced by a simple explanation of polymers.  Students then followed directions to create two different types of polymer balls.  Students then experimented with the two different balls.

Duration of lesson(s):
-    Entire lesson took about 2 hours.  Safety instructions – 20 minutes, introduction to polymers – 15 minutes, creation and experimentation of two polymer balls – 1.5 hours, wrap-up – 20 minutes

Grade level(s) and/or target group(s):  7th Grade – Advanced/Honors Students

Subject(s):  Physical Science

Technologies used:  Undergraduate lab equipment

Objectives:
1)    To introduce students to polymers
2)    To allow students to go to a lab and create polymer balls
3)    To help students to see a working lab
4)    To encourage and stimulate student interest in science

Key Questions/Driving Questions:
What are polymers?  How does a different amount of glue affect the number of bounces of our bouncy balls?

Prerequisites and Sequence of Lessons in Unit:
Because this was an enrichment lesson there are not any prerequisites.  However, these students were familiar with ideas such as physical and chemical changes and energy.
